IWD: President Tinubu Pledges Economic Boost and Transformative Change for Women

Marking a historic moment for the nation, President Ahmed Tinubu launched the Nigeria for Women Programme on Thursday at the Banquet Hall, Aso Villa.

This initiative aims to significantly enhance the lives of Nigeria women, children, and vulnerable individuals, promising positive transformations for the entire nation.

During the inauguration ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized the indispensable role played by women in a nation’s development.

He assured the public of his administration’s commitment to implementing policies and initiatives that positively impact women’s lives and families, fostering an environment conducive to their well-being.

Representing the President, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, underscored the importance of the Nigeria for Women Programme in improving the welfare of women across the country, particularly those in rural areas.

He called on traditional and religious leaders, as well as development partners, to support the administration in advancing the cause of women.

Also, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, speaking on the International Women’s Day (IWD), delivering a powerful message celebrating women’s resilience, passion and courage.

She urged women to invest in one another, emphasizing that supporting education, dismantling economic barriers, and amplifying women’s voices are crucial steps for accelerated progress.

Barrister (Mrs.) Uju Kenenedy-Ohananye, the Minister of Women Affairs, detailed the components of the Nigeria for Women Programme, including the National Women e-Market Portal, National Helpline, Naija Save Nigeria, and Nigeria Integrity Brigade Project.

These initiatives are dedicated to promoting women’s economic empowerment and ensuring social inclusion.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Barrister Kennedy-Ohanenye stressed the need for sustainable empowerment to reduce poverty and create job opportunities, aligning with the government’s policy thrust.

Amb. Gabriel Aduda, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, described the Nigeria for Women Project as creating an enabling environment for the realization of women’s dreams and promoting gender equality.

He commended donors, development partners, and stakeholders for their support and acknowledged the President’s administration for fostering an environment conducive to women’s empowerment.

UN Women’s Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, emphasized the pivotal role of gender equality and women’s empowerment in achieving sustainable development. She called for increased action and investment in women’s economic empowerment globally and specifically in Nigeria, highlighting the importance of recognizing it as a fundamental human right.

The Nigeria for Women Programme signifies a significant step towards transformative change, fostering economic growth, and improving the well-being of women, children and the vulnerable in the country.
