CONCERNED about impending wave of floods in Ibadan, the Oyo State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management (OyoNEWMAP) has launched a series of initiatives aimed at mitigating the risks of flooding in Ibadan and surrounding areas.

The agency also cautions residents to heed to early flood precautions for their own safety saying that NEWMAP’s proactive approach signals efforts a concerted intent to safeguard communities against the devastating impacts of floods.

Project Coordinator, Barrister Tayo Ayoade, emphasized the importance of early warning systems and community engagement during a press briefing held in Ibadan.

He announced an extensive advocacy and sensitization programme scheduled to take place across 33 local government areas within the state.

He said the initiative aims to educate residents on preventive measures and prompt responses to flood hazards.

With floods wreaking havoc on infrastructure and livelihoods, residents of the Olodo community in Egbeda local government area appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde for urgent intervention due to a collapse of a crucial bridge due to flooding left commuters stranded, highlighting the pressing need for comprehensive flood management strategies.

NEWMAP’s efforts extend beyond awareness campaigns. The project has commenced desilting and clearing operations in seven targeted local government areas, including Oluyole in Ibadan.

By addressing erosion and improving waterway conditions, NEWMAP aims to reduce the vulnerability of communities to flooding, enhancing resilience in the face of climate-induced disasters.

Engagement with community leaders and stakeholders underscores NEWMAP’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable solutions.

Also, Project Coordinator Omowunmi Yakub, emphasized the importance of cooperation for effective implementation and maintenance of flood mitigation measures.

Gov Makinde’s administrations has prioritized flood resilience, reflecting a broader vision to safeguard the well-being of Oyo state residents.

NEWMAP notes that as climate change intensifies the frequency of extreme weather events, initiatives like its agency’s proactive measures offer hope for communities grappling with the impacts of floods.

And by fostering awareness, enhancing infrastructure, and engaging stakeholders, Oyo State is taking decisive steps towards building a resilient future in the face of visible environmental challenges.

In addition, Ayoade’s appeal to residents underscores the importance of embracing safety practices and adopting environmentally friendly behaviours.

He encouraged them to properly dispose of waste which is crucial in mitigating the risks of flooding and erosion, as improper waste disposal can lead to blockages in drainage systems and exacerbate environmental degradation.

Ayoade added that by cultivating a culture of safety and environmental consciousness, communities can contribute to the preservation of their surroundings and minimize the impact of natural disasters.
