EXPRESSING profound distress over the recent turmoil that led to the tragic loss of army officers and soldiers in Okuama community, Ugbelli South local government area, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, conveyed his sentiment during a gathering at the Government House annex in Warri.

Welcoming the Chairman and members of the Board of Enquiry commissioned by the Defence Headquarters to probe the Okuama Killings, Governor Oborevwori pledged unwavering support to the Board’s investigate efforts.

In a poignant gesture of respect and solidarity, he led a high-level delegation from the State Security Council and the State Executive Council to attend the funerals of the fallen officers and soldiers in Abuja.

Emphasizing the imperative of a thorough and transparent investigation to identify the perpetrators of this grievous crime, Governor Oborevwori stressed the paramount importance of safeguarding innocent citizens from further suffering.

“In Delta State, we abhor violence. We are committed to ensuring peace and security for our people. The establishment of this Board of Enquiry is commendable step towards seeking justice and understanding the truth behind the tragic events,” Governor Oborevwori remarked.

He underscores the proactive measures undertaken by the state government to foster peace, citing the successful celebration of Christmas without incident as a testament to the efforts of security agencies and the state’s commitment to maintaining order.

Furthermore, Oborevwori highlighted the pivotal role played by the Advisory and Peace Building Council and the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution bodies in promoting enduring peace within the state.

Reflecting on the state’s proactive engagement with the Okuama/Okolola communities, Governor Oborevwori recounted a peace accord signed on February 7th, involving key stakeholders from the affected areas.

The governor assured the Board of Enquiry of the state’s full cooperation, promising to provide comprehensive information and submit a position paper outlining the state’s role in the events leading up to the crisis.

In response, Chairman of the Board of Enquiry, Air Vice Marshal David Ajayi, reiterated the mission’s objective of gathering factual evidence to facilitate thorough understanding of the circumstance surrounding the Okuama incident.

Ajayi emphasized the importance of fostering constructive dialogue and collaboration between security forces and local communities to facilitate the restoration of economic activities and societal harmony.

The governor urged the Board to extend invitations to relevant stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, and residents, to ensure a comprehensive and impartial investigation, noting that the visit of the Board of Enquiry signifies a crucial step towards unravelling the complexities of the Okuama tragedy and fostering reconciliation and healing within the affected communities.
