GOVERNOR Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has unveiled plans to establish a judicial panel of inquiry aimed at scrutinizing the conduct of governance in the state preceding his tenure.

This revelation came during the induction ceremony of Mr. Dagogo Israel Iboroma, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as the new Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, held at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Expressing the critical importance of the Attorney-General’s role, Fubara emphasized the need for bold and resolute legal interventions, particularly in addressing the plethora of legal issues confronting the state.

He entrusted Iboroma with the responsibility, highlighting the necessity of his appointment during a time of considerable legal challenges.

Addressing Iboroma directly, the governor underscored the significance of his appointment, urging him to uphold integrity and defend the interests of the people diligently. He emphasized the impending establishment of the judicial panel of inquiry, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in governance.

Fubara lamented the persistence of political discord within the state, expressing regret over the absence of a resolution despite efforts for reconciliation.

However, he affirmed the state government’s determination to forge ahead, citing the establishment of a functional State House of Assembly and the appointment of a competent Attorney-General as indicators of progress.

In a thinly veiled criticism directed at the former Attorney-General, Prof. Zaccheaus Adangor, Fubara condemned actions perceived as sabotage against the government as he commended Iboroma’s professional credentials, contrasting them with the alleged misconduct of his predecessor.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly endorsed Iboroma’s appointment following his successful screening. Led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo, the House expressed confidence in Iboroma’s capability and pledged support for his tenure.

Acknowledging Fubara’s intervention in facilitating legislative proceedings, Speaker Oko-Jumbo condemned the arson attack on the State House of Assembly, which occurred in October 2023. He commended the governor’s swift response and expressed gratitude for the provision of an alternative venue for legislative activities.

Following the confirmation of Iboroma, the House adjourned its session to reconvene on Thursday, marking a significant step in the state’s governance and legal affairs.
