By Joke Kujenya

SEQUEL to the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and several other senior officials which occurred in mountainous terrain during adverse weather conditions, sparking speculation and accusations on social media platforms, Israel has been fingered to have been behind the incident.

While there has been no official confirmation of the cause of the crash, suspicions have been raised, with some pointing fingers at Israel, a historical rival of Iran.

Notably, the helicopter was returning from Azerbaijan, a country allied with Israel, adding fuel to the speculation of Israeli involvement.

Israeli authorities have vehemently denied any role in the crash, stating, “It wasn’t us,” through an unnamed government source. The crash has, however, intensified tensions between Iran and Israel, who have been engaged in recent confrontations, including airstrikes and indirect talks mediated by the United States.

Iran has launched an investigation into the crash, aiming to determine the cause amid persistent conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, reactions to President Raisi’s death varied among Israeli politicians, with some expressing indifference and others making pointed remarks about his policies and threats towards Israel.

President Raisi, known as a hardliner and potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been a controversial figure both domestically and internationally. His death in the crash marks the end of a tenure marked by tightening of morality laws, crackdowns on protests, and efforts in nuclear negotiations with world powers.

Prior to his presidency, Raisi held various judicial positions, including involvement in a committee responsible for sentencing thousands of political prisoners to death, earning him the nickname “Butcher of Tehran” and international condemnation.

The crash has not only claimed the lives of key Iranian officials but has also raised questions about the ongoing tensions in the region and the complexities of diplomatic relations among neighboring countries.
