DELTA STATE Government has terminated the contract for the rehabilitation of Warri Township Stadium due to unsatisfactory progress.
This decision was announced by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, following a State Executive Council meeting led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban), Comrade Reuben Izeze, explained that the contractor failed to meet the required standards and timelines, jeopardizing the 24-month completion goal.
The state governor was said to have been committed to revitalizing both Asaba and Warri during his inaugural address, under the MORE Agenda.
The termination of the current contract aligns with this promise, and a new contractor will soon be appointed to ensure the Warri Stadium project is completed to modern standards.
Additionally, Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, reported an upward review of several projects due to the escalating costs of construction materials.
The council approved adjustments to various projects aimed at enhancing urban renewal and connectivity across the state.
Key approvals included the 6-lane Asaba Water Front road construction, internal roads in Sapele, and the completion of roads in Ughelli and other areas.
Aniagwu highlighted the revised plans for several critical infrastructure projects noting that the 4.4km Obi-Ibabu Road is set for completion within weeks, while the Emevor-Orogun road is nearing inauguration.
The Kwale-Beneku bridge, linking Ndokwa West to Ndokwa East, and the Orere Bridge in Ughelli South are also slated for expedited completion, he said.
To mitigate future delays, Governor Oborevwori has implemented a strategy for reasonable mobilization funds, ensuring contractors can commence work promptly.
Contractors providing an Advance Payment Guarantee will receive initial funds, with immediate payments upon meeting project specifications, it was noted.
The Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Johnbull Tonukari, announced Exco’s approval of N1.33 billion for retirement and death benefits to 186 retirees of Delta State University, Abraka, following a forensic audit to verify beneficiaries.

DR. OSUOZA also revealed Exco’s approval of His Royal Majesty, Kingsley Emuakpor Orherhe, as the Ovie of Agbarha-Warri Kingdom.
Further, the council endorsed amendments to road traffic regulations and revised interest rates on naira credit facilities for contractors.
Ban on Commercial Motorcycles and Scrap Metal Scavenging Imposed
ALSO, IN A move to curb rising crime, Delta State has banned commercial motorcycles (Okada) and scrap metal scavenging in the state capital, Asaba.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, announced the ban, citing frequent criminal activities linked to Okada riders and vandalism by scavengers.
The ban, effective immediately with strict enforcement starting June 1, 2024, aims to enhance security and protect public assets.
Violators will face severe penalties, including confiscation and destruction of motorcycles, fines, and possible jail terms.
This decision, targeting various areas including Ethiope East, Ika North East, and Warri South, follows extensive discussions at security council meetings.
Dr. Emu emphasized that the regulations are intended to safeguard the broader community and will be rigorously enforced to ensure compliance and enhance public safety.
