DELTA STATE Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has publicly expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the military high command for the withdrawal of troops from the embattled Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.

In a media briefing, Oborevwori hailed the decision as a significant step towards restoring peace and normalcy in the region. He emphasized that with the departure of the troops, the residents of Okuama could now safely return to their homes and commence the crucial process of rebuilding and reintegration.

During the briefing, he said, “My Dear Good People of Delta State, I have the pleasure to announce to you that, upon many deliberations and collaborations between the State Government and the Military Leadership, the Nigerian Army has agreed to withdraw its officers and men from Okuama.”

He continued, “I spoke with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja on Monday, 6th of May, and as at today, 8th of May, 2024, the Military have withdrawn from Okuama.”

Oborevwori expressed his profound gratitude to President Tinubu, the Chief of Army Staff, and the entire Nigerian Army hierarchy for their understanding and cooperation throughout the process. He commended their commitment to addressing the plight of the displaced persons.

The governor also extended appreciation to members of the National Assembly, distinguished Nigerians, traditional rulers, and other leaders who supported the state during the Okuama crisis.

Reiterating his administration’s dedication to peace and security, Oborevwori assured the people of Delta State of their unwavering commitment. He stressed the importance of handling security matters with tact, wisdom, and patience, emphasizing that they should not be subject to daily media discourse.

As Okuama residents prepare to return home, Oborevwori pledged the full support of the Delta State Government to facilitate a smooth and seamless reintegration process. He highlighted ongoing efforts to establish an Internally Displaced Persons camp at Ewu to aid in rehabilitation.

“It is my prayer and belief that NEVER AGAIN would Delta experience the kind of tragedy that happened in Okuama,” Oborevwori stated. He emphasized that security is a shared responsibility and called for the continued support and cooperation of every citizen to maintain the state’s safety and peace.

In conclusion, Governor Oborevwori extended condolences to the families of the victims of the Okuama incident, reaffirming the government’s commitment to preventing such tragedies in the future.
