Tinubu to Attend Ramaphosa’s Inauguration in South Africa

TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will travel from Lagos, Nigeria, to Pretoria, South Africa, to attend the inauguration of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa’s inauguration follows his re-election for a second term as President of South Africa which came after a deal between his party, the African National Congress (ANC), and the Democratic Alliance, along with other smaller parties, allowing the incumbent to secure another five-year term.

Although his party won 159 out of 400 seats in Parliament, it has forged a ruling coalition with its old rivals, Democratic Alliance and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

The coalition partners re-elected Ramaphosa in Parliament last  Friday.

The ANC had won 40 percent of the vote in the recent general election but lost its absolute majority in parliament for the first time, leading to the formation of a “government of national unity.”

Ramaphosa was first sworn in as President on February 15, 2018. Following the inauguration ceremony, President Tinubu will return to Nigeria, according to a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, on Monday.
