Lawmakers Push for Six-Year Single Tenure for President, Governors, and Two Vice Presidents

A SIGNIFICANT push for constitutional reform is gaining momentum in the House of Representatives, as a coalition of lawmakers proposes a single six-year tenure for the president and state governors.

This initiative, championed by Ikenga U Ugochinyere, representative of Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency, aims to foster national stability and reduce government expenditure.

The group, known as Reformed Minded Lawmakers, consists of thirty-five federal legislators.

They argue that a single term will enhance efficiency in governance and support cost-cutting measures.

In addition to the tenure change, they advocate for a rotational presidency among the six geopolitical zones to ensure equal representation and mitigate regional agitations.

At a plenary session on Monday, Ugochinyere emphasized the potential benefits of this amendment, highlighting improved governance and reduced electoral costs.

The proposal also includes conducting all elections on a single day and ensuring pre-election matters are resolved 30 days prior to elections, aiming to streamline the electoral process and boost credibility.

Further, the lawmakers recommend the introduction of two vice presidents, with specific roles for succession and economic management, to address emergencies and enhance administrative stability.

They also propose stringent penalties for electoral officers who fail to comply with electronic result transmission, aiming to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

The proposed amendments reflect a comprehensive approach to enhancing governance, ensuring equitable power distribution, and improving electoral efficiency in Nigeria.
