A NIGERIAN Air Force (NAF) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) encountered a mishap shortly after takeoff on a mission near Rumji Village, approximately 15 kilometers from the base.
The incident, which occurred early Monday, has prompted an immediate preliminary investigation to determine the cause.
Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, NAF spokesman, confirmed the incident, emphasizing that no casualties were involved as the vehicle was unmanned. He assured that this setback would not hinder ongoing military operations.
In response to widespread reports on social media and some traditional media outlets claiming a helicopter crash in Kaduna, Gabkwet clarified that no such event occurred.
He said the misinformation highlighted the dangers of hasty reporting without verification, a practice he urged media professionals to avoid in favor of balanced and accurate journalism.
Earlier in the day, local media had reported a NAF helicopter crash in Tami village, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, causing alarm among residents, stating that the incident occurred around 5:00am, describing the scene as chaotic yet fortunate, as the pilot reportedly executed emergency protocols effectively, emerging largely unscathed from the wreckage.
It was noted that residents quickly gathered to offer assistance, expressing relief that no lives were lost.
Military personnel swiftly secured the crash site, conducting preliminary assessments to determine the cause of the incident. As of the time of this report, NAF had not released an official statement on the helicopter incident, although an investigation is anticipated.
