WITH THE aim to bolster security and protect lives and property across Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced it will begin enforcing the digital Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) on July 29, 2024.
This initiative was announced by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, spearheaded the e-CMR to rejuvenate and digitalize the motor vehicle registration system.
This advanced, real-time online repository will store motor vehicle data, aiding in crime prevention and investigation, the Police notes.
The e-CMR will also monitor and combat crimes such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
Adejobi emphasized that the e-CMR would streamline the documentation and verification processes for vehicle ownership and related transactions.
Furthermore, the e-CMR, will, among others;
- Validate vehicle genuineness and ownership, enhancing the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles.
- Prevent the purchase of stolen vehicles by unsuspecting buyers.
- Facilitate a smooth transition, the NPF has launched a public awareness campaign.
Citizens are therefore urged to register their vehicles and obtain their respective digital certificate through the dedicated website: https://cmris.npf.gov.ng.
Adejobi stressed the importance of compliance, noting that the new system aligns with the objectives of the Inspector-General to enhance public safety and national security.
The police further provided detailed information on the registration process, including the necessary documentation and verification steps; vis
- Vehicle owners must supply accurate data to ensure the integrity of the registry.
- The process includes verifying ownership details, license numbers, engine numbers, and chassis/body information.
To make this easier for Nigerians, the NPF also established contact points for additional inquiries and technical support.
To reach the CMR Command Centre at FHQ Abuja, citizens are to dial 08117777666 and 09169892000.
For the FHQ Annex in Lagos, the Command can be contacted via 08117777555 and 09169891000.
Technical support is available through the email address cmrtech@npfcmr.ng.
The police also outlined enforcement procedures, stating that;
- Non-compliance could result in penalties, including fines and impoundment of vehicles.
To prevent this, Adejobi urged vehicle owners and users to embrace the e-CMR initiative promptly to avoid inconvenience and legal repercussions.
He said this digital transition is part of the NPF’s broader strategy to leverage technology for enhanced security as the police aim to significantly reduce vehicle theft and related crimes.
By creating a reliable database, the e-CMR will facilitate quicker and more efficient law enforcement responses.
The IG’s directives also include extensive publicity to ensure public awareness.
The NPF has therefore called for cooperation from all citizens to support this crucial initiative.
Adejobi reiterated the police’s commitment to using strategic approaches to enhance public safety and national security.
“The enforcement of the e-CMR is necessary to ensure a safer and more secure environment for vehicle ownership. We urge all vehicle owners and users to promptly key into this initiative for optimum safety and security,” Adejobi stated.
He adds that the introduction of the e-CMR marks a significant step towards modernizing Nigeria’s vehicle registration system and reflects the NPF’s dedication to adopting innovative solutions to address contemporary security challenges.
As the July 29 deadline approaches, he insisted that the police continue to emphasize the importance of public participation in this transformative project.
