THE LAGOS State Government on Wednesday debunked a viral fake news circulating on social media, stating emphatically that the State has not re-introduced the monthly environmental sanitation and is not starting any movement restriction by the end of July.
In a statement signed by the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the government clarified that the viral news is the work of mischief makers aiming to confuse residents.
Wahab urged all residents to disregard the fake news and continue their daily activities without concern, adding that there will be no restriction of movements on the last Saturday of July as falsely claimed.
He explained that what Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on Sunday during a sanitation sensitization exercise at Campos playground, Lagos Island, was the commencement of a weekly community-based sensitization and awareness exercise involving all residents.
“The Governor also stated that State Government officials will lead from the front every week by joining residents in cleaning their environment voluntarily while spreading the message,” Wahab said.
Tokunbo Wahab emphasized that at no time did the Governor announce the start of a monthly exercise and restriction in July or any other month.
The Commissioner urged all residents to adopt the habit of cleaning their surroundings regularly, rather than waiting for the government to declare a specific month for sanitation or movement restrictions.
This was contained in a release issued by the Director of Public Affairs, MOE & WR, Kunle Adeshina, on July 17, 2024.
