RIVERS STATE Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called on traditional rulers to play a pivotal role in enhancing community security and fostering economic stability in Nigeria.

Addressing the 117th/118th Combined Quarterly General Meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers at their Secretariat in Port Harcourt, the governor emphasized the need for collective effort to advance Nigeria’s progress.

He urged traditional rulers to take control of their territories and tackle the menace of economic sabotage, such as illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism, which undermine national oil production.

He stressed that these criminal activities originate from within the communities, and it is essential for local leaders to act decisively against them.

The Governor expressed his commitment to supporting the traditional rulers in their efforts.

He pledged financial assistance if needed to help establish community vigilance initiatives.

Fubara highlighted the importance of increased crude oil production as a cornerstone for national economic stability.

New Appointment

In his address, Governor Fubara also appointed a new chairman for the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, praising the immediate past chairman’s service while noting the importance of fresh leadership to unify the council.

He emphasized the need for the new chairman to lead with integrity and foster cooperation among the council members.

The Chairman

Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, the new chairman, thanked the governor for his ongoing support and commitment to peace despite political challenges.

He urged the governor to avoid retaliatory violence, emphasizing that such actions would only play into the hands of those seeking to destabilize the state.

Eze Wodo called on traditional rulers to maintain neutrality and focus on promoting peace.

Community Concerns

Engr. Charles Amadi, the Rivers State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, voiced concerns over the degradation of community values and called for a renewed focus on traditional rulers’ roles in addressing social issues.

He commended those rulers who have effectively contributed to peace and good governance.

Fubara also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing opportunities for all residents, including the vulnerable, through enhanced healthcare, commercial agriculture, and education.

Concerns for Widows

During a recent visit by the Rivers Widows and Widowers’ Forum, the governor assured that his policies aim to improve living standards for all, encouraging the group to participate in government programmes.

Road Works Inspection

Additionally, the Governor inspected the Okania-Ogbogoro Road project, a crucial infrastructure development aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving access in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The road, neglected for 14 years, is now 90% complete with drainage work and is expected to be finished by December.

Governor Fubara appreciated the project’s progress and the positive impact it will have on local communities.
