House of Reps Demands End to Security Agencies’ Attacks on Journalists

THE HOUSE of Representatives demands an immediate halt to attacks on journalists by security agencies.

Lawmakers disclosed that they have decided to investigate recent cases of journalist detentions and will pressure the government to uphold press freedom.

On Thursday, the decision followed the adoption of a motion by Clement Jimbo, a lawmaker from Akwa Ibom.

Jimbo condemned the use of the Cybercrime Act by security agencies to target journalists.

He highlighted that the Police continue using this act against journalists, despite its recent amendment.

Jimbo noted a rise in attacks on journalists under the current administration.

He pointed out that many journalists face unlawful arrests, detentions, and harassment while performing their duties.

These actions are often justified using the offence of cyber-stalking outlined in the Cybercrimes Act of 2015.

Earlier this year, the President signed an amendment to the Act, which included significant changes to Section 24.

This section specifies what constitutes cyber-stalking and the penalties for such offences.

Despite this, law enforcement agents have ignored these changes and continue their crackdown on free speech.

Following the motion’s adoption, the House resolved to pass laws that strengthen protections for press freedom.

They also noted that they will conduct inquiries into recent journalist detentions and will work to pressure the government to respect press freedom.
