TOWARDS A notable legislative stride, the Lagos State House of Assembly convened a pivotal session focused on advancing the proposed Lagos Electrification Agency Law.

Led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the closed-door meeting hosted a delegation from the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) to deliberate on crucial reforms aimed at revolutionizing the state’s electricity infrastructure.

The legislation, which recently cleared its second reading amidst robust debate, seeks to supersede the existing Lagos Electric Power Reform Law of 2018.

Central to its provisions is the establishment of a comprehensive regulatory framework designed to empower the newly envisioned Lagos Electricity Market.

Additionally, the bill aims to create the Lagos State Electrification Fund, targeting equitable and reliable electricity distribution across all corners of the state, particularly underserved areas.

Following its referral to the Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, chaired by Hon. Sobur Oluwa, the assembly has set a rigorous timeline for review and recommendations.

Stakeholders, including Cardinal James Odumbaku and Sen. Anthony Adefuye, expressed optimism about the bill’s potential to enhance local autonomy in managing electricity transmission and regulatory affairs.

The Speaker reiterates that the assembly’s proactive stance is a reflection of their concerted effort to address longstanding challenges in energy accessibility and reliability, towards positioning Lagos State at the forefront of innovative legislative solutions in the energy sector.
