THE LAGOS State House of Assembly has summoned the State Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, to explain the recent Supreme Court judgment on local governments.

Lawmakers seek clarity on the court’s decision and its constitutional implications.

On Thursday, a seven-man panel of the Supreme Court declared that the 774 local government councils in Nigeria should receive funds directly from the Federal Government and manage them independently.

The court also ruled that allocations to local government councils run by caretaker committees are illegal.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, after a voice vote by lawmakers, stated the need to understand the judgment fully.

He emphasized the importance of the Attorney-General’s briefing to avoid any legal missteps.

In another matter, the Assembly decided to commend the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for the successful operation that eliminated nine kidnappers in Lagos.

A commendation letter will also be sent to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Mustapha Fayoade, recognizing the police’s efforts in the operation.

Speaker Obasa, during the plenary, urged the police to continue ensuring the safety of Lagos residents.

He also called for the establishment of state police to complement the federal police system.

The Majority Leader, Noheem Adams, recounted how the police operation in the Ladipo area resulted in the elimination of nine kidnappers, bringing calm to the area.

He noted that the Ikorodu area, previously plagued by kidnappings, now enjoys relative peace.

Additionally, the House praised Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for promoting subsistence agriculture.

Speaker Obasa said he supported the idea of home gardens, recalling the benefits of school farms in the past and advocating for their return to improve food sufficiency.
