LAGOS STATE, on Wednesday, declares it aims to secure regular power supply with a new Electricity Bill.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, represented by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, highlighted the government’s commitment to solving power issues at a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday.

The bill seeks to empower Lagos to license, generate, transmit, and distribute electricity to underserved areas.

Obasa emphasized that the bill aims to improve the electricity sector and contribute to the state’s sustainable development.

The bill will establish mechanisms for electricity planning and promote off-grid solutions for households and small businesses.

“Electrification is crucial for economic viability and citizens’ well-being,” Obasa stated.

The state plans to create an agency and fund to ensure professional and technological standards in electricity access.

Obasa noted that the move aligns with Lagos taking advantage of electricity now being on the concurrent list.

Chairman of the House Committee on Energy, Hon. Sabur Oluwa, detailed the bill’s provisions at a public hearing.

He explained that the bill will establish a regulatory framework for the Lagos Electricity Market to ensure reliable electricity for all residents.

The bill also proposes creating the Lagos State Electrification Agency and Electrification Fund.

These institutions will manage public electricity infrastructure and ensure power delivery to underserved areas. “Reliable electricity is essential, not a luxury,” Oluwa stated.

Vincent Umoh, Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Power Engineering, South West, urged the Assembly to ensure the agency is headed by experienced technocrats.

He emphasized the need for 1,000 megawatts of power to stabilize supply in Lagos.
