NCC Orders Reactivation of Blocked Lines

THE NIGERIAN Communications Commission (NCC) has instructed telecom operators to immediately restore all lines that were blocked over the weekend.

This action follows widespread disruptions faced by subscribers who could not access their services due to unverified National Identification Numbers (NINs) linked to their SIM cards.

The NCC’s directive aims to alleviate the inconvenience caused by these blockages and prioritize consumer access.

Affected subscribers should be aware that this reactivation is temporary, providing a brief window to complete the NIN-SIM linkage.

The NIN-SIM linkage policy, introduced in December 2020, was designed to enhance national security and create a reliable SIM ownership database.

Despite several deadlines and extensions—initially set for April 15, 2024, and later extended to July 31, 2024—many lines remain unverified.

Over the weekend, many users experienced disruptions after failing to verify their NINs.

This led to protests at various network provider offices, with customers demanding the reactivation of their blocked lines.

Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs, emphasized that the NCC’s focus is on consumer convenience.

He urged affected users to quickly verify their NINs to regain full access to their lines.

The NCC clarified that this reactivation is intended to provide users a short period to complete their NIN verification.

Subscribers who have not yet linked their NINs should do so promptly to avoid further interruptions.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) confirmed that the disconnections were unrelated to recent protests.

ALTON explained that the disconnections were part of an ongoing process to improve the accuracy of the National SIM registration database.

The association advised customers with blocked lines to contact their service providers to resolve any discrepancies.

ALTON reiterated its commitment to supporting government efforts and ensuring communication rights and data privacy.
