PARTNERING WITH the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), a tree planting initiative for environmental restoration kicked off at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The event, held at the university’s council chamber, received accolades from Prof. Olumide Banjo, represented by Prof. Adekunle Adeogun, for the support extended.

During the occasion, Polaris Bank’s Executive Director, Chris Ofikulu, emphasized that the tree planting drive aligns with the global theme of “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” echoing the United Nations’ Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).

Ofikulu articulated the bank’s commitment to sustainable practices, highlighting their proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges, particularly in regions affected by erosion like Ogun State.

“At Polaris Bank, sustainability isn’t merely a slogan; it’s our guiding ethos,” remarked Ofikulu, underscoring the bank’s dedication to responsible banking and environmental stewardship and emphasized that every decision, from investments to operations, is grounded in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

The choice of TASUED as the launch site for the tree planting initiative underscores Polaris Bank’s longstanding relationship with the university, dating back to 2007 as this collaboration aims to not only enhance environmental health but also foster sustainable economic growth and community well-being.

Speaking on the initiative’s scope, Ofikulu announced plans to plant 500 trees, with an initial 250 seedlings planted at TASUED and the remaining 250 designated for another location within Ogun State.

In response, TASUED’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwole Banjo, expressed gratitude for Polaris Bank’s contributions to the university’s development. He urged continued support, highlighting the mutually beneficial nature of their partnership.

Ayodele Alamu, Senior Manager, Partnerships at NCF, emphasized the broader ecological goals of the initiative, aiming to reverse deforestation trends and restore Nigeria’s forest cover.

Alamu stressed the urgent need for collective action against climate change and its detrimental effects on land degradation and erosion.

The event also saw the participation of notable figures including Mrs. Bukola Oluyadi, Rasheed Yusuf, Abiodun Daramola, and Yemi Akinrelere, underscoring the collaborative effort towards environmental sustainability and community resilience.

Collectively, they noted that through initiatives like these, the commitment of stakeholders to environmental preservation and sustainable development would steadfastly demonstrate and ensure a greener and more resilient future for all.
