PRESIDENT BOLA Tinubu has announced the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, aimed at resolving the ongoing conflicts between pastoralists and farmers in Nigeria.

This announcement came during the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reforms at the State House in Abuja.

Tinubu emphasized that this new ministry would address the perennial issues that have plagued the nation for years.

He stated, “We have identified the solution to the adversity that has troubled us for so long. The prosperity we seek is within our grasp.”

The president will serve as the chairman of the committee, with former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Attahiru Jega, as his deputy.

The committee will work on implementing recommendations to foster peaceful coexistence between herders and farmers while boosting Nigeria’s livestock and dairy industries.

Tinubu also highlighted the economic benefits of the livestock sector, noting its potential to improve agricultural productivity, enhance export opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.

He stressed the importance of maintaining the quality and safety of perishable goods through efficient cold-chain logistics, which will reduce food waste and ensure a steady supply.

In his address, Tinubu called for the depoliticization of the committee’s responsibilities and urged the Ministry of Information and Technology to aid in tracking livestock using advanced technologies.

He also directed the Attorney General to resolve any legal obstacles and asked the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning to secure funding for the initiative.

Tinubu assured that the federal government is prepared to cover the cost of acquiring land necessary for the project and envisioned a future where Nigeria produces enough milk for school children, becomes a net exporter of cheese and yogurt, and develops a thriving leather industry.

He emphasized the importance of seizing this opportunity to transform the nation’s livestock sector.

The president reiterated his commitment to the success of the committee and the nation and encouraged collaboration among all stakeholders to achieve lasting solutions and bring about economic prosperity.

MACBAN Responds in Appreciating

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has expressed their appreciation for the establishment of the new ministry.

The association’s president, Alhaji Baba Usman Ngelzarma, praised the move, highlighting its potential to address the entire livestock value chain holistically.

“The creation of this ministry is a significant step forward. It will provide comprehensive solutions to production, processing, marketing, and transportation issues within the livestock sector,” Ngelzarma said.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, and other members of MACBAN also extended their congratulations to President Tinubu, acknowledging the positive impact this development will have on the industry and the nation as a whole.
