THE OYO State government sealed a popular business facility at the Barracks-bus Stop-Iwo Road axis of Ibadan on Wednesday for failing to comply with environmental regulations.
Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, directed officials to seal the premises during an inspection.
Architect Mogbonjubola explained that the shopping complex was repeatedly warned and monitored but failed to register with an accredited waste contractor.
The inspection revealed a lack of sanitary refuse drums, leading to indiscriminate dumping of waste in unauthorized areas, violating state environmental laws.
The Commissioner stated that this action was necessary to prevent disease outbreaks in the area.
He urged residents, shop owners, and corporate bodies to adhere to state environmental regulations to avoid sanctions.
In a related effort, the Oyo State government reiterated its commitment to tackling flood and erosion to protect lives and property.
Architect Mogbonjubola discussed these measures during an advocacy and sensitization programme for the 11 Local Government Councils in Ibadan zone.
The Nigeria Erosion and Watersheds Management Project (OYONEWMAP) organized the event at Mapo Hall in Ibadan South East Local Government area.
According to Bukola Bakare, the Project’s Communication Officer, the programme aimed to educate local councils, community leaders, youth leaders, and market traders on their roles in maintaining a sustainable environment.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of collective efforts to achieve a healthy and developed environment for the people of Oyo State.
