THE COST of maintaining a healthy diet in Nigeria has risen significantly as the Cost of a Healthy Diet (CoHD) Report, June 2024 reveals.
As of June 2024, the national average cost stands at N1,241 per adult per day, a 19.2% increase from May 2024’s N1,041.
This spike highlights growing concerns about food affordability and access.
The South-West zone recorded the highest average cost at N1,545 per day, while the North-West had the lowest at N956.
This regional disparity reflects varying economic conditions and access to affordable food items.
Animal source foods were the most expensive, making up 35% of the total cost but providing only 13% of daily calories.
Fruits and vegetables also contributed significantly to the cost despite their lower calorie content.
The rising cost outpaces both general and food inflation.
Since January 2024, the cost of a healthy diet has increased by 45%, driven mainly by higher prices for vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and starchy staples.
Understanding these trends is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to improve food security.
Addressing supply challenges and improving market access for affordable food items are essential steps.
