ONYEKA ONWENU, the late legendary singer, will be buried before the end of August 2024.
This revelation came from her family on Tuesday during a condolence visit by a delegation from the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) at her Ikoyi, Lagos apartment.
Onwenu, who was a member of MCSN, passed away last Tuesday after performing at Chief Stella Okoli’s 80th birthday party.
Her sons, Abram and Tijani, received the delegation led by Orits Wiliki, Chairman of the MCSN Board of Trustees.
They expressed their intention to honor their mother’s wishes by arranging a swift burial.
Though a specific date has not been announced, the family assured that the burial plans will be made public soon.
In the condolence register at her home, King Sunny Ade wrote, “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever.”
The delegation included flutist Tee Mac, who pledged to perform at the service of songs, Kenny Ogungbe, and Mayo Ayilaran, General Manager of MCSN.
Onyeka Onwenu had previously expressed her desire for a modest and private burial.
In a 2021 editorial for Premium Times, she requested a quick and simple ceremony without undue mourning, hoping her life would be celebrated with prayers and lighthearted moments.
The family reiterated their commitment to fulfilling her wishes and will announce the detailed burial arrangements in the coming days.
