NIGERIA PLANS to create over 1.4 million jobs annually in the cotton and textile sector.

The Federal Government and the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) are working together to revive this industry.

The project will enhance farming, weaving, and ginning in the cotton value chain.

Vice President Kashim Shettima met with the ICAC delegation, led by Executive Director Eric Trachtenberg, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Shettima stressed the need for a detailed plan to revitalize the sector.

He assured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration would focus on seizing opportunities in the cotton value chain.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos highlighted his state’s readiness to support the cotton sector.

He noted that Lagos, with its infrastructure, is crucial for the cotton value chain and job creation.

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State emphasized the role of the Southeastern region in the cotton industry’s revival.

He spoke about the potential for job creation and economic recovery through this initiative.

Eric Trachtenberg of ICAC praised Nigeria’s leaders and stakeholders for their dedication.

He highlighted the success of the cotton value chain in countries like China, India, and Pakistan. Trachtenberg assured that ICAC would offer expert advice to boost productivity and attract investment in Nigeria’s cotton sector.

The meeting also included Chief Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, and Dr. Tanimu Yakubu, Director General of the Budget Office.

Their participation indicates strong support for the cotton and textile industry’s revival.
