THE OYO State government has taken legal action against a motorist accused of assaulting an officer from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Mokola roundabout, where Mr. Gwabo Mark allegedly attacked Mr. Lateef Ayodeji Apesin, an OYRTMA officer.
According to witnesses, the officer had stopped Mark for committing a traffic violation under code MTF 082, which involves picking up and dropping off passengers in unauthorized areas.
During the confrontation, Mark reportedly struck the officer in the face and damaged his mobile phone.
OYRTMA Chairman, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd), condemned the attack, calling it “unacceptable and cowardly.”
He assured the public that the agency would pursue all necessary legal measures to ensure Mark faces justice.
“As Chairman of OYRTMA, I will not tolerate any form of violence or intimidation against our officers,” Adekoya stated.
Following the incident, Mark was arrested and brought before the Magistrate Court in Mapo on Friday.
He was charged with assault and destruction of property, resulting in a fine of N500,000 and the requirement of two sureties.
The court adjourned the case until September 20, 2024.
