OGUN STATE Governor Dapo Abiodun has urged the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to adopt a more respectful approach in their dealings with traders in the state.
The governor expressed concern over reports of Customs officers forcefully entering shops and warehouses in search of smuggled goods.
Traders in Ogun State have accused Customs officials of breaking into their business premises without proper authorization.
This has led to widespread frustration and complaints among the trading community.
During a meeting with the Comptroller General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, Governor Abiodun addressed these grievances directly.
He acknowledged that while there may be individuals engaged in illegal activities, the majority of traders in Ogun State are law-abiding citizens conducting legitimate business.
The governor emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and fostering economic development in the state.
He called for a more considerate approach from Customs officers, ensuring that their operations do not disrupt the livelihoods of innocent traders.
“There is a serious concern from our market women and men,” Governor Abiodun said.
“They have complained bitterly about your officers breaking into their shops and warehouses while searching for smuggled goods.
“Some were even planning to protest. While I understand the need to curb smuggling, it’s essential that we treat our people with respect.
“Most of them are law-abiding and contribute positively to our economy.”
Governor Abiodun appealed to the Comptroller General to address the situation and instruct his officers to be more civil in their interactions with traders.
He stressed that a peaceful relationship between security agencies and the business community is crucial for the state’s prosperity.
In response, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi expressed his disappointment with any inappropriate conduct by Customs officers.
He assured the governor that the issue would be investigated, and corrective measures would be taken to prevent future occurrences.
