Senate Denies Claims of Self-Determined Salaries and Presidential Favouritism

THE NIGERIAN Senate has firmly rejected allegations that it controls its own salaries or receives special financial benefits from the Presidency.

These accusations emerged after a visit by members of the House of Representatives to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stirring significant public concern.

Senate Spokesman Yemi Adaramodu, representing Ekiti South, labeled the claims as an unjust attempt to malign the legislature.

He asserted that no Senator has received financial favours from the Presidency.

According to Adaramodu, the Senate merely suggests and nominates projects for their constituencies, a practice observed in democracies worldwide.

The Senate clarified that it only receives the salary determined by the Revenue Mobilization Fiscal Allocation Commission, in line with constitutional guidelines.

Adaramodu challenged anyone with evidence to disprove this, labeling any suggestion that the National Assembly sets its own salaries as unfounded and misleading.

He further explained that the Executive branch is responsible for awarding contracts related to constituency projects.

The funds allocated for these projects vary by constituency, aimed at ensuring equitable distribution of federal resources across Nigeria.

As the political climate intensifies, Adaramodu reassured the public of the 10th Assembly’s commitment to responsible governance and adherence to constitutional limits.

He emphasized that the Senate would continue to focus on Nigeria’s economic growth without seeking additional benefits from other government branches.
