FLOODING IN Borno State has reached catastrophic levels, surpassing any seen since 1994.
The capital, Maiduguri, has been experiencing severe water overflow that has led to wild animals from the local zoo wandering the streets as the media widely reported.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate evacuation of affected areas in response to the disaster.
President Tinubu also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate relief to flood victims as he announced commitment to mobilizing federal resources to support the affected state.
This measure comes as part of his commitment to assist the state during this crisis.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno, has also pledged that the federal government will prioritize the welfare of flood victims.
Shettima, currently in Maiduguri, assured residents that the administration’s comprehensive flood response plan will address both immediate needs and long-term solutions.
The federal government, represented by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammad Idris, has expressed its condolences and pledged support.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has also received solidarity from the Northern States Governors’ Forum Chairman, Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State.
Senator Jibrin Barau and former Senate Leader Mohammed Ali Ndume have also called for federal, international, and development partner assistance.
Flooding in Other States
In addition to the situation in Borno, Yenegoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, also suffered from severe flooding.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has advised regional governments to allocate budgets for disaster management to prevent future crises.
Floods Render Thousands Homeless
The Borno floods have displaced thousands, affecting critical facilities such as the central post office and Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The University of Maiduguri has temporarily shut down, as announced by its registrar Ahmad A. Lawan.
In his assessment, Vice President Shettima, acknowledged the unprecedented scale of the flooding.
He noted that despite proactive measures, the severity of this disaster has overwhelmed existing contingency plans.
He said the federal government remains determined to address the immediate needs and long-term impacts of this crisis.
Floods from Dam Overflow
The flood, triggered by excess water from the Alau Dam, has caused widespread damage.
Efforts are underway to evacuate residents and provide essential services, including food, shelter, and medical care.
The VP highlighted the broader impact of climate change, emphasizing the need for effective flood mitigation strategies.

Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, on behalf of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, offered solidarity and support to Borno State.
He urged for enhanced relief efforts from the federal government and humanitarian organizations, commending the swift response by local authorities and emergency responders.
Flooding in Yenagoa
Similarly, heavy rainfall in Yenagoa has caused severe flooding, affecting homes and businesses.
Many students were stranded, and some residents had to be rescued from drowning.
The flood has caused significant damage in Amarata and other areas, with many people rendered homeless.
ECOWAS Advisory
The Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) has urged governments at all levels in West Africa to budget for disaster management more conscientiously. T
he Deputy Director of NADMO, Frank Nansam-Aggrey, highlighted the recurring nature of disasters and the need for proactive budgeting and coordinated efforts.
Zoo and Prison Crisis in Maiduguri
The flooding in Maiduguri is reported to have led to the death of numerous animals in the Sanda Kyari Zoo and the escape of dangerous wildlife.
Additionally, inmates have fled the Maiduguri New Correctional Centre due to damage from the floods.
Authorities said they are working to recapture the escaped animals and address the prison break.

The flooding crisis has also impacted other states, with over 200 lives lost and more than 800,000 people affected nationwide.
