A SURGE in traffic violations continues to disrupt road safety in Abuja, as 823 traffic offenders were arrested during the ongoing ‘Operation Karara’ by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The crackdown, launched to address issues of traffic light and zebra crossing violations, also saw 923 offenses registered, with 189 vehicles confiscated and 634 licenses seized.
The FRSC initiated the operation on September 1, 2024, to curb dangerous driving habits and prevent road accidents in the Federal Capital Territory.
The commission emphasized that the operation aims to educate and regulate road users while prosecuting violators to reduce traffic-related accidents.
FRSC Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide noted that the collaborative effort with other security agencies is vital to ensuring compliance, as many offenders were caught ignoring zebra crossings, engaging in reckless driving, and violating road markings.
The enforcement action, endorsed by Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, aligns with broader safety measures.
Mohammed expressed satisfaction with the success of the initial stages of the operation but urged the FRSC to intensify patrols at critical intersections, especially during peak traffic hours.
He also reminded motorists to observe road safety rules and avoid reckless behaviour.
