ONLINE PUBLISHERS have been enjoined to focus on making decisions that set them apart as ethical entrepreneurs in the media space.
This was the strong message from Maureen Chigbo, President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), during the group’s 8th Annual General Meeting held at Reverton Hotel, Lokoja, Kogi State.
Chigbo emphasized that unethical practices must be avoided by publishers, who should adhere strictly to the ethical standards that define professional journalism.
Addressing the over 100 members of GOCOP, she stated that the future of journalism lies online, a reality even traditional media organizations have acknowledged by shifting focus to digital platforms.
For GOCOP members, this future comes with a responsibility to maintain high ethical standards and professionalism in their work.
The AGM, which took place on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, focused on business growth and ethical practice.
According to Chigbo, self-discipline and adherence to ethical rules are essential for maintaining credibility.
In her opening remarks, she noted that the event is designed to revitalize members’ businesses and reaffirm their commitment to ethical journalism.
The capacity-building session led by seasoned professionals was a key highlight of the event.
Chigbo explained that the inclusion of GOCOP members who have succeeded in the industry as resource persons was intentional.
The goal was to encourage peer review and learning, ensuring that more members can succeed in the rapidly evolving online publishing industry.
In his presentation, Dr. Maxwell Amuchie, Founder and CEO of Sundiata Post Media Ltd, outlined revenue-generating strategies for online publishers.
His session, titled “Low Hanging Fruits: A Revenue Strategy for Online Publishers,” focused on practical ways for online publishers to increase their earnings.
Amuchie identified opportunities like sponsored posts, link insertions, text link adverts, and press releases as immediate sources of income.
He also highlighted major revenue schemes such as banner adverts, digital advertising, events management, and licensing.
Chigbo expressed gratitude to GOCOP members for their continued support, while commending the organizing committee for the successful planning of the AGM.
She urged all corporate members to engage in social responsibility projects, sharing GOCOP’s own initiative of visiting an orphanage as an example.
The AGM also provided an opportunity for GOCOP to reflect on its progress and make plans for the future.
Members were reminded of the importance of building sustainable business models that provide value and attract revenue in the growing online media landscape.
