MONDAY’s DESTRUCTION of public infrastructure in Rivers State has raised national concerns as political thugs set fire to multiple local government secretariats, severely damaging state property.
These coordinated attacks, reportedly carried out by loyalists of a prominent political figure, have left communities reeling.
The widespread destruction, involving arson and vandalism, has prompted urgent calls for law enforcement intervention and a thorough investigation.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed his deep concern following an on-site inspection of the wreckage at the Isiokpo Local Government Secretariat in Ikwerre.
He condemned the attacks, noting the substantial damage to state assets built through taxpayer funds.
Governor Fubara urged residents to refrain from destroying public property, highlighting the significant financial and developmental setbacks caused by such acts of violence.
He also directed the Nigerian Police Force to swiftly investigate the incidents and apprehend the perpetrators, emphasizing the need for justice.
The Governor, visibly troubled by the scale of destruction, criticized the involvement of political thugs, reportedly aligned with loyalists of former Governor Nyesom Wike.
He stressed that politics should not involve such reckless violence and urged those responsible to act with integrity and responsibility.
“This level of damage to our state’s infrastructure is unacceptable,” he said.
“Those involved in this senseless destruction must be held accountable. We cannot allow politics to destroy the progress we have made.”
He added that the ongoing violence has not only impacted local government operations but also heightened fears about political instability in the region.
The Governor’s inspection followed a visit to Akwa Ibom, where he met with Governor Umo Eno, signaling broader concerns about regional security.
RSHA Calls for Decisive Action
Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo, also called for decisive action from law enforcement.
Addressing the issue during a screening session for commissioner nominees, Oko-Jumbo appealed directly to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene and bring the perpetrators to justice.
He described the attacks as unpatriotic and detrimental to the peace and progress of Rivers State.
“We cannot afford to have individuals who think they can burn down government property and walk free,” Oko-Jumbo said. “This is a clear attack on the state and its people.”
The speaker made his appeal during the House’s screening exercise for four commissioner nominees.
The screening, held in the Hallowed Chambers at the Government House in Port Harcourt, resulted in the confirmation of Hon. Israel Lebura Ngbuelu, Hon. Evans Bapakaye Bipi, Barr. Otamiri John Ngubo, and Hon. Barr. Benibo Anabraba as commissioners.
These newly appointed officials will now face the task of helping to stabilize governance in the state amid ongoing unrest.
The attacks have raised national questions about security and political violence, especially as Rivers State plays a critical role in Nigeria’s economic and political landscape.
The destruction of public property underscores deeper issues of governance, accountability, and the proper conduct of political actors.
Many observers are now calling for tighter security measures to prevent further escalation of violence in the state.
The Governor further called for peace, urging all stakeholders to promote stability rather than violence.
The House of Assembly session, which involved key government figures, was adjourned until October 10, 2024, allowing more time to address the security crisis and strategize further action against those responsible for the attacks.
