FOOTBALL LEADERSHIP of Libya has been plunged into disarray after the abrupt resignation of the country’s Football Federation President, Abdul Hakim Al-Shalmani.
His departure comes amidst intense scrutiny and public outcry following a string of poor performances by the national team, including their recent 1-0 loss to Nigeria in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
Al-Shalmani, facing mounting pressure, stepped down ahead of a looming vote of no confidence from clubs that had threatened to boycott the Libyan Premier League.
Many felt his tenure lacked vision and direction.
While the resignation sent shockwaves through the Libyan football community, the Nigerian Super Eagles found themselves stranded for over 13 hours at Libya’s Al Abraq International Airport.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that the Super Eagles had eventually returned safely after the ordeal.
