PARENTS IN Lagos are protesting the sharp increase in boarding fees at the state’s model colleges, which rose from N35,000 to N100,000 for the 2024/2025 session starting on September 15, 2024.
In a swift response, the Lagos State House of Assembly directed the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara, to gather all stakeholders and report back within a week.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, intervened after hearing the protesters chanting at the Assembly gate.
He assured the parents that the Assembly would address their concerns and urged them to remain calm.
During the plenary, Hon. Sangodara informed the House that the committee had already engaged the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders.
Hon. Shabi Adekola explained that, for now, parents should continue paying the original N35,000 until further review of the fees.
Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu explained that the fee increase primarily covers students’ feeding costs, but he encouraged the government to consider ways to reduce the financial pressure on parents.
Hon. Bonu Solomon added that some students, unable to pay the new fee, could not buy food on school premises, worsening the situation.
The Assembly says it is awaiting the report from the education committee before taking further steps.

We say no to hike increase of feeding fee and government should not deny our children thet right to free education because we are tax payer.
It is unfair for our governor in Lagos state to increase boarding fees twice in his tenure from 25k to 120k at his first tenure after a protest brought down to 35k now his second tenure nw from 35k to 100k.is unfair.secondly he said he has been doing some maintenance in the school.we are not seeing any.it has been the parents and parents forum of some of this model colleges doing it.so investigation should take pls.and our governor should know that,that is the way that embezzle our 35k and they are say is not enough.we say No to 100k boarding fees.
Let’s hope it would be reversed quickly as the House of Assembly has now stepped in.
