A 41-YEAR-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for importing 35.20 kilograms of synthetic cannabis, known as “Canadian Loud,” into Nigeria.

The Federal High Court in Lagos delivered the verdict on October 23, 2024.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended Munju on October 3, 2024, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport during the inspection of passengers arriving on a KLM flight.

Munju confessed to being lured into trafficking the drugs for 10,000 Canadian dollars through an online platform.

She stated her financial struggles stemmed from the need to fund her master’s degree in Canada.

Justice Dehinde Dipeolu sentenced her after she pleaded guilty to two counts.

The prosecution outlined how Munju’s actions violated sections of the NDLEA Act, warranting severe penalties.

During the hearing, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Angela Mba provided evidence, including the suitcases concealing the drugs, Munju’s passport, and laboratory test results.

The court accepted these as valid exhibits.

After reviewing the facts, Justice Dipeolu imposed a six-year sentence for the first count and five years for the second.

Alternatively, Munju could pay a total of N100 million in fines.

Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa, CEO of NDLEA, praised the law enforcement efforts and the judiciary for their swift actions.

He emphasized that this case serves as a stern warning to potential drug traffickers.
