DELTA STATE Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed all 25 Local Government Council Chairmen to implement the new minimum wage for council workers, effective November 2024.
Oborevwori issued the directive on Tuesday during a meeting in Asaba with leaders from Delta’s chapters of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
Key state officials, including the Auditor General (Local Government), Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, and the Accountant-General, were also in attendance.
Governor Oborevwori acknowledged that while the passing of the Local Government autonomy law has placed additional responsibilities on the Councils, they must prioritize workers’ welfare by upholding the new wage structure.
Emphasizing accountability, he urged the council leaders to strictly adhere to procurement laws in all transactions.
Additionally, the governor recommended that the councils hold a retreat to educate officials on financial management, encouraging active participation from the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to ensure transparency and curb potential abuses in council finances.
