NIGERIA IS mourning the loss of its Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who passed away days ago at age 56 in Lagos following a brief illness.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shared the announcement through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, noting the profound loss to the nation and its security forces.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lagbaja embarked on his military career with the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987 and rose through the ranks to become a pivotal leader.

After his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992, Lagbaja’s service spanned multiple regions, where he spearheaded operations vital to Nigeria’s security, including Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.

His contributions were widely recognized, especially his efforts to stabilize conflict zones and combat insurgency.

Lagbaja’s recent appointment as Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, marked a continuation of his legacy of dedication to the nation’s peace and security.

His death comes as a heavy blow to Nigeria’s armed forces, where he was known as a leader deeply committed to both his troops and the Nigerian people.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) also expressed sorrow, highlighting Lagbaja’s unwavering support in the fight against pipeline vandalism and oil theft.

“Lt. General Lagbaja was instrumental in securing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure,” the NNPC stated, noting his role in protecting the country’s economic interests.

His collaborative efforts with NNPC strengthened Nigeria’s response to oil-related security threats, demonstrating his commitment to national prosperity.

President Tinubu, the Nigerian Army, and the entire nation remember Lagbaja not only for his valor and dedication but for his enduring impact on Nigeria’s security landscape.

His passing leaves a gap in Nigeria’s defense leadership, with tributes pouring in from military personnel, government officials, and citizens alike who honor his life of service.
