NIGERIA’s POWER sector faces renewed pressure as Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister for Power, orders the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and related agencies to swiftly implement recommendations from an inter-agency committee investigating recurring grid collapses.
This directive followed another national grid disturbance on November 7, 2024, attributed to a frequency spike from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, which caused yet another service disruption, the second in 72 hours.
In a statement, the TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, explained that the frequency surge originated from technical issues at a substation, necessitating its shutdown to avoid further complications.
Restoration efforts were launched immediately, with power returning to the Abuja axis within 28 minutes.
TCN reported it is addressing weaknesses highlighted in the committee’s findings, undertaking repairs on key infrastructure like the Shiroro–Mando 330kV transmission line, substantial upgrades at Jebba substation, and restoring the Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV line.
While these repairs aim to enhance grid stability, TCN cautioned that intermittent disruptions may continue until all upgrades are completed.
Mbah appealed for public understanding, acknowledging the disruptions’ impact on daily life and national productivity.
TCN reiterated its dedication to bolstering grid stability, essential for Nigeria’s socio-economic development, and assured the public that comprehensive measures are underway, including infrastructure repairs on vandalized lines and technical upgrades recommended by the inter-agency report.
