THE UNIVERSITY of Ibadan (UI) proudly celebrated a major milestone at its 2024 convocation ceremony, with 418 students graduating with First Class honours.

These high achievers are from 15 faculties, including the university’s distance learning centres and affiliated institutes.

This significant achievement was disclosed on Wednesday, November 13, by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, during the first day of the convocation which is part of the institution’s 76th Foundation Day ceremony holding from November 13–16 and November 18, 2024.

He disclosed that a total of 6,664 students graduated across various disciplines, marking the university’s continued commitment to producing top-tier graduates in the face of growing challenges in Nigeria’s education sector.

Prof. Adebowale also addressed the gathered students, parents, and dignitaries, urging the graduates to channel their talents, passion, and unique perspectives into making a positive impact in society.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed his pride in the graduating class, noting that their success was a testament to their resilience, creativity, and perseverance.

Furthermore, he acknowledged that the education provided by the university was not the end of their journey but merely the foundation for greater things to come.

Prof. Adebowale stressed that the world needs individuals who are not only educated but also equipped with the skills and values that would enable them to navigate the complexities of the modern world.

He urged them to approach their future with confidence, empathy, and a commitment to making a difference in their communities and beyond.

“Your education here is just the beginning,” he said. “You are now empowered to face the challenges ahead with courage and competency.

As you venture into the world, remember that you have been given the foundation to build something great. The world needs your unique perspectives, and I have no doubt that you will make a significant impact wherever you go.”

Moreover, the Vice-Chancellor addressed some of the difficulties the institution has faced in recent years, particularly with funding and inconsistent government policies.

Noting that despite these challenges, he emphasized that the university had remained steadfast in its mission to provide world-class education and produce globally competitive graduates.

He pointed out the current economic difficulties that have exacerbated these issues, particularly with regard to funding, and called for renewed commitment from the government to the advancement of education in Nigeria.

“The challenge of accessing quality education has only become more pronounced,” Prof. Adebowale stated.

“While there has been an increase in the number of private universities, the fact remains that more than 95% of university education access in Nigeria is through federal and state institutions.

“The need for a more coordinated and consistent educational policy is urgent. I also believe that universities, especially public ones, should be granted more financial autonomy to better address the challenges we face,” the VC stressed.

He also highlighted that the university had been making efforts to engage its alumni network, seeking their support to help sustain the institution’s development.

He expressed hope that government policies could facilitate smoother operations for public universities, which would benefit both the institutions and their students.

Gratitude Key to Success

The convocation ceremony also featured a powerful convocation lecture delivered by Kehinde Ogunwumiju, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and alumnus of the university.

Ogunwumiju, Managing Partner of Afe Babalola & Co., shared his personal journey and discussed the principle of gratitude as a key to success.

He credited his own achievements to embracing gratitude and emphasized how it could positively impact the graduates’ personal and professional lives.

“I urge you all to carry the principle of gratitude with you as you move forward,” Ogunwumiju advised the graduating class.

“Gratitude will guide your decisions, enhance your relationships, and empower you to succeed in life. It will enable you to harness the resources around you and help you achieve your goals.”

The lecture was not just an address to the graduates but also a reminder to them of the importance of maintaining strong values in an ever-changing world.

Ogunwumiju’s words resonated deeply with the audience, reminding them that success is not just about achieving personal goals but also about being thankful for the opportunities that come their way.

Expressing Gratitude to Parents

One of the most emotional moments of the day came during the speech by the Valedictorian, Usman Oyekan, who spoke on behalf of the graduating students.

Oyekan expressed deep gratitude to the university, his fellow students, parents, and guardians who supported them throughout their academic journey.

He acknowledged the significant challenges faced by students during the course of their studies, including the disruptions caused by COVID-19 and the impact of strikes by workers’ unions.

Despite these setbacks, Oyekan commended the university’s perseverance and the resilience of his peers in overcoming these hurdles to reach this momentous occasion.

“Though we faced many obstacles, including the global pandemic and industrial actions, we have stood strong and persevered,” Oyekan said. “Today, we celebrate not just our academic achievements but also our collective ability to overcome adversity.”

The 2024 convocation ceremony also recognized the achievements of other outstanding students across various fields, with awards and accolades presented to the best-performing students in different disciplines.

The UI continues to produce graduates who are not only academically excellent but also socially responsible, equipped with the knowledge and values needed to thrive in a globalized world.

Looking Ahead with Bright Hopes

Prof. Adebowale’s closing remarks reflected the collective optimism for the future of the graduates.

He reaffirmed that the University of Ibadan would continue to strive for excellence, despite the challenges it faces.

He reminded the graduates that as alumni, they now belonged to a global community that shared a commitment to fostering positive change and making significant contributions to society.

“As you leave these hallowed grounds, remember that you are part of something bigger than yourselves,” Prof. Adebowale concluded.

“You are now part of the global network of University of Ibadan alumni who are making a difference in their various fields. Stay connected, support one another, and continue to inspire others.”
