THE DECLINING state of Nigeria’s print media took center stage as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori urged journalists to prioritize truthful reporting and promote unity.
Speaking at the 30th-anniversary celebration of The Pointer newspaper in Asaba, the governor challenged the media to consolidate its constitutional role of holding leaders accountable while fostering national development.
Governor Oborevwori, honoured with the ‘Exemplary Democrat and Transformational Leadership Award’, emphasized that journalists must avoid exacerbating Nigeria’s religious and ethnic divides.
He said, “Balanced reportage is essential for peace and sustainable growth. Truth must be spoken to power responsibly.”
The governor lauded The Pointer for its contributions to informing, educating, and entertaining Deltans.
However, he lamented its dwindling circulation, low advertising revenue, and poor online presence.
“A thirty-year-old publication still reliant on government patronage must change its model to become financially independent,” he said, advocating for innovative marketing strategies and robust online operations.
He commended the newspaper’s editorial consistency and professionalism, noting that many journalists from The Pointer had risen to significant political positions.
Yet, he tasked the newspaper’s leadership to enhance its operations and develop market-specific products to boost revenue.
Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, praised The Pointer as one of Nigeria’s exemplary state-owned publications.
He called for increased staff training to maintain high performance. Similarly, Commissioner for Information Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza highlighted the publication’s resilience and urged the governor to expand its print capacity.
Olorogun Ebenezer Okorodudu, chairman of The Delta Printing and Publishing Corporation, highlighted that 20% of the newspaper’s revenue is allocated to staff development.
He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to truth, unity, and the governor’s MORE agenda while pushing forward with both print and digital expansions.
Governor Oborevwori assured attendees of his administration’s dedication to press freedom, transparency, and collaboration, urging journalists to fact-check reports for accuracy and ethical fairness.
