GHANA’s 2024 presidential election has concluded with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Mahama, declared president-elect.
The Electoral Commission (EC) announced that Mahama secured over 50% of the votes, defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Mahamadu Bawumia, by a significant margin of 1.7 million votes.
Jean Mensa, chairman of the EC, confirmed Mahama’s victory after he garnered 6.3 million votes compared to Bawumia’s 4.5 million.
Mahama dominated in 13 of Ghana’s 16 regions, cementing his political comeback and solidifying support for the NDC.
Ghana media notes that this outcome marks a major political shift, as Mahama, a former president, regains leadership after previously losing to NPP in 2016.
His campaign focused on addressing economic challenges, infrastructure development, and fostering unity.
Meanwhile, Bawumia’s defeat signals a blow to the ruling NPP, which managed to secure wins in only three regions.
The election reflects Ghanaians’ desire for change amidst growing economic concerns and public demand for effective governance.
