ALLEGATIONS OF reckless spending have surfaced against the Lagos State House of Assembly.
A group, the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition, accused the Assembly of expending N17 billion on constructing a gate and demanded an investigation.
The claim also extended to an alleged N200 million spent on a thanksgiving event.
At plenary on Thursday, Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa categorically refuted the accusations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
He stated that such allegations were fabricated to stir controversy ahead of the 2027 elections.
“How much is the Assembly’s entire allocation for the year that we would spend N17 billion on a gate? This House has never embarked on such a project.
“The thanksgiving held last Friday, attended by dignitaries, didn’t cost N200 million, as claimed,” he clarified.
Obasa also dismissed claims of his involvement in the screening and confirmation of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede by the National Assembly.
“There are CCTV cameras at the National Assembly, and the media would have reported my presence if I were there. This is to set the record straight for the public, not the accusers,” he added.
The Assembly’s spokesperson, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, addressed the allegations, reiterating the House’s commitment to integrity and accountability.
He clarified that the House does not handle constituency intervention funds or projects, as those fall under the executive arm.
“We hold annual stakeholders’ meetings across the state to compile constituents’ expectations for inclusion in the executive’s budget. The Assembly does not implement projects,” Ogundipe stated.
He criticised the anti-corruption group for failing to conduct thorough research before levelling accusations.
“These baseless claims are politically driven and lack evidence,” Ogundipe concluded.
The Lagos State House of Assembly affirmed its adherence to transparency in all activities and expressed disappointment at attempts to malign its reputation.
