EFFORTS TO improve the welfare of police officers in Lagos State received a significant boost on Thursday with the launch of a 2,200-unit housing project at Ijeh Police Barracks, Ikoyi.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu notes that the state is taking the bold steps to address the living conditions of police officers with the redevelopment of the Ijeh Police Barracks in Ikoyi.
On Thursday, Sanwo-Olu performed the groundbreaking ceremony for 2,200 modern housing units as part of his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel and safeguarding the lives and properties of Lagosians.
The project, a collaboration between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force, reflects a strategic effort to enhance the morale and productivity of officers by providing them with conducive living conditions.
The initiative also underscores the government’s broader commitment to urban renewal and addressing the housing deficit across the state.
The housing complex will feature one, two, three, and four-bedroom apartments, as well as maisonettes and townhouses.
Each unit will be equipped with modern amenities, including paved roads, drainage systems, sewage tanks, water treatment plants, streetlights, car parks, and electrification systems.
The facilities are designed to provide officers and their families with a comfortable and safe environment, ensuring they can focus on their critical role in maintaining law and order in the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the transformative nature of the project during the ceremony, which was attended by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, alongside other senior government officials and stakeholders.
According to the Governor, the redevelopment aligns with his administration’s THEMES+ agenda, which prioritises urban renewal, infrastructure development, and improved living standards for Lagosians.
He said the joint venture between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force represents a model for effective collaboration between the public and private sectors.
“This transformative redevelopment project at Ijeh Police Barracks, Obalende, is part of our intervention aimed at bridging the housing deficit and ensuring modern, safe housing for the officers of the Nigeria Police Force and their families,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The Governor noted that the redevelopment would not only improve the standard of living for police officers but also support the broader socio-economic objectives of the state.
He added that his administration had been working to construct housing units in various locations across Lagos to support urban renewal initiatives and ensure that no one is left behind in the drive for decent and affordable housing.
Sanwo-Olu assured attendees that the project would be completed within two years, adding that it represents a blueprint for other states to follow in rebuilding police barracks nationwide.
“We urge other state governments to emulate this model to rebuild police barracks across the country, ensuring officers live in environments that support their efficiency and productivity,” he said.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its commitment to the welfare of police personnel.
He stated that the initiative would significantly boost the morale of officers, enabling them to focus on their duties of protecting lives and properties across the state.
The project is seen as a landmark step in addressing the longstanding challenges of inadequate and outdated accommodation for police officers.
It also serves as a testament to the Lagos State Government’s recognition of the crucial role played by security personnel in fostering peace, safety, and development within the state.
