SUSTAINABLE FUNDING for research and technological advancement in Lagos State is currently gaining momentum as legislators have advanced a bill to establish a dedicated research trust fund.

The proposed law, sponsored by Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, aims to create a structured mechanism for financing research across tertiary institutions and key sectors.

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Princess Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has referred the bill to a sub-committee for further review following its second reading.

Lawmakers backing the initiative praised its potential to foster economic growth, stimulate industrialisation, and position Lagos as a leader in scientific and technological progress.

Yishawu stressed that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic hub, must prioritise research to maintain its competitive edge. He argued that a well-funded research and development system would drive innovation and enhance governance.

Concerns over taxation surfaced during discussions, but legislators agreed on the bill’s importance.

Hon. Noheem Adams highlighted the transformative power of research funding, referencing historical breakthroughs like the invention of the telephone to illustrate how innovation shapes society.

The ad-hoc committee will refine the bill before its next legislative stage, paving the way for structured research funding to boost Lagos State’s industrial and technological landscape.
