THE LEGACY of a remarkable legal mind and passionate advocate for human rights, Barrister Sebastian Townsend Ukegheson, will be honoured as he is laid to rest in London.

His final rites will take place at East London Cemetery, Grange Road, following a funeral service at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Canning Town, scheduled for 13:30 GMT.

The prolific lawyer, who dedicated his career to international dispute and conflict resolution, passed away on December 12, 2024, after a prolonged battle with throat cancer.

He was 54. Until his death, he practised at Stella Maris Solicitors LLP, London, and had previously served at Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

With a strong presence on social media, especially the WhatsApp, and an avid lover of nature, Ukegheson often shared inspirational quotes, Bible passages, and humorous posts, even from his sickbed.

He found solace in the beauty of flower gardens, parks, and scenic environments, often expressing how such spaces brought him peace.

When illness confined him indoors, he ensured that his curtains remained open to witness the sunrise and sunset.

His foster daughter, Ofure Ojefua, reflecting on his love for nature, has requested that attendees incorporate a “touch of a flower” into their outfits—a tribute to his appreciation for beauty and positivity. This could be a pin, brooch, cufflink, or any floral-patterned clothing item.

The announcement of his burial was jointly made by Stella Maris Solicitors LLP and his family, confirming arrangements for those wishing to participate virtually.

A live stream will also be available to enable well-wishers to pay their last respects remotely.

Ukegheson is survived by two biological sons, aged 21 and 19, who are undergraduates in London, and a 38-year-old foster daughter.

His passing is deeply felt by many who encountered him via a WhatsApp platform, The Crest Readers Hub, where he was a vibrant intellectual presence.

Known for his articulate insights, wit, and profound knowledge, he enriched discussions on diverse topics, including law, politics, faith, business, and global affairs, as well as sometimes, shook the table. But he was always quick to ensure that issues were amicably resolved and peace restored.

His unwavering commitment to his salvation in Jesus Christ remained evident until his last breath.

Barrister John Komolafe, owner of Stella Maris Solicitors LLP, where Ukegheson worked for over a decade, described him as a “brilliant and loyal” legal professional.

Fighting back tears, Komolafe recounted their years together, praising Ukegheson’s unwavering dedication and resilience despite his health struggles.

“He was exceptionally brilliant,” Komolafe said.

“He soaked himself in work and delivered on every aspect of our corporate objectives. There was never a dull moment with Sebastian.

Despite his challenges, he remained kind-hearted, fiercely loyal, and deeply accommodating.

He also bore his affliction with stoic faith in Jesus Christ which was a testimony to the fact that we shall meet again at the feet of Christ on resurrection day.”
