THE ENVIRONMENT is noted to hold the key to human well-being and economic progress.

Businesses, industries, and biodiversity also depend on a stable climate, yet decades of environmental degradation threaten this balance.

Also, extreme weather, pollution, and deforestation have intensified, putting global health, food security, and economies at risk.

Experts also stated that as climate change accelerates, the role of engineers in sustainability has never been more critical.

Their stance is that green engineering and innovative technologies offer viable solutions to curb emissions, optimize resources, and drive a transition to renewable energy.

Additionally, digital transformation, AI-powered energy grids, smart cities, and circular economy practices are reshaping industries for a more sustainable future.

All these yearly, on 4 March, World Engineering Day (WED) highlights these contributions, celebrating the profession’s impact on global development.

This year’s theme, “Shaping Our Sustainable Future Through Engineering,” reinforces how technology and engineering solutions can address pressing environmental challenges.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a global leader in advancing sustainable engineering, announced it has pioneered various initiatives to drive climate action.

Through research, technological advancements, and interdisciplinary collaboration, engineers continue to push boundaries.

Also with IEEE’s Climate Change Initiative, Sustainable ICT programmes, and AI-driven environmental solutions, these are just some of the strides being made toward sustainability.

Despite progress, major challenges remain.

The world still relies heavily on fossil fuels, and policies lag behind the urgency required to meet global climate goals.

While engineering advancements provide hope, industries and governments must implement policies that support large-scale green initiatives.

Also, JMG Limited, a key player in Nigeria’s energy sector, says the organisation joins the global celebration of WED, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable solutions.

The company announced it is spearheading a series of events, including a Road Walk for Engineering and Renewable Energy Awareness on 14 March 2025, bringing stakeholders together to promote solar energy adoption.

Speaking on the significance of these milestones, Rabi Jammal, Group General Manager of JMG Limited, emphasized the transformative role of engineers in shaping industries and economies.

“Engineering remains at the heart of innovation, infrastructure, and energy transformation.

As we celebrate World Engineering Day and Solar Appreciation Day, we reaffirm our dedication to fostering solutions that drive sustainable development, particularly in renewable energy,” he stated.

Jammal further notes that as the world shifts toward sustainability, engineers remain at the forefront of innovation, developing solutions that shape a cleaner, more resilient future.

He said their expertise, combined with policy support and industry-wide commitment, is key to addressing climate challenges. “However, the journey toward sustainability requires collective action, and the time to act is now,” Jammal stated.
