HEALTHCARE SERVICES in Gombe State have received a major boost as the Federal Government officially upgrades the General Hospital, Kumo, into a Federal Medical Centre.
The conversion positions the facility as the second federal medical institution in the state, following the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe as conveyed through Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga in a statement that reaffirmed the FG’s commitment to expanding healthcare facilities nationwide.
The statement reveals that the newly designated Kumo Federal Medical Centre is set to function as a tertiary healthcare institution, providing advanced medical services while also serving as a critical training ground for medical professionals.
The development is expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery across Gombe State and the wider Northeastern region, particularly in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya had initiated the request for the hospital’s transition to a federal facility, highlighting the pressing need for enhanced medical services.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu granted the approval, citing the dire healthcare statistics in the Northeast and the broader need to strengthen medical infrastructure in Gombe State.
It was also noted that the Federal Government’s decision acknowledges the commitment of the Gombe State Government to revitalising the healthcare sector as it aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which encompasses sweeping reforms aimed at addressing systemic challenges in Nigeria’s health system.
President Tinubu lauded Governor Yahaya’s dedication to public welfare, emphasising that the upgrade would enhance medical accessibility and service delivery in the state.
