THE CRITICAL link between education and crime prevention has been emphasised by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, as he stresses the importance of investing in education to enhance security and curtail criminal activities.
During an inspection of the ongoing construction of the Model Technical College in Omadino, Warri South Local Government Area, Governor Oborevwori highlighted how quality education creates viable opportunities for young people, keeping them away from crime and fostering a safer society.
Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to improving educational infrastructure, he pledged continued support for teachers and policies that ensure inclusive and effective learning for all.
However, the governor expressed dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the project, urging contractors to rectify the identified shortcomings.
He reiterated his commitment to prioritising education, stating, “Education is my priority, and we are using it to checkmate crime. Our focus is on initiatives that deter criminal activities by empowering people through learning.”
Governor Oborevwori also reassured the people of Delta State that his administration would remain steadfast in building a strong foundation for future growth and prosperity.
He cited ongoing technical school projects in Kiagbodo and Bomadi as evidence of his commitment to the sector.
Strengthens Oversight on Project Delivery
In a separate inspection, Governor Oborevwori revealed that the Delta State Government has adopted a proactive approach to contractor payments, implementing a weekly payment schedule based on submitted certificates.
This measure aims to prevent project delays and ensure timely completion.
Speaking during an inspection of the Orere Bridge in Ughelli South LGA, he stressed that contractors must only undertake projects they can complete within set timelines.
“The Orere Bridge, initiated by the previous administration, is a crucial infrastructure that connects over fifteen riverine communities.
Without it, access to these areas is extremely difficult. Once completed, it will provide significant benefits to the surrounding communities,” Oborevwori stated.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to engaging both international firms and indigenous contractors to balance expertise with local economic empowerment.
While acknowledging the quality of work on the Orere Bridge, the governor criticised the slow pace of construction, demanding that the contractor accelerate progress.
“This job lacks the required speed. If we continue at this rate, how long will I keep coming for inspections? My expectation is that the next visit should be for final inspection before commissioning.
“The contractor has until the end of the year to make significant progress. If necessary, we will reduce their contract scope to ensure focused execution,” he warned.
To enhance efficiency, the governor stated that underperforming contractors handling multiple projects would see some of their contracts revoked.
He reiterated that timely payment was not an issue, as the government processes payments weekly based on certified work completion.
He also highlighted the economic significance of the Orere Bridge, emphasising its potential to boost trade and mobility for residents. “If there were no economic value, we wouldn’t be constructing a bridge of this magnitude here.
Apart from connecting communities, it will facilitate the transportation of local produce to urban centres, reducing dependence on boats and increasing market accessibility.”
He also inspected the 46km Ohoror-Bomadi Road, which links Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Patani, Burutu, and Bomadi local government areas. The approval of this road project was met with widespread jubilation, indicating the residents’ enthusiasm for its completion.
At Edo Road in Ughelli, which is being constructed using concrete, the governor praised the contractor for maintaining high construction standards. He noted that once asphalt overlay is added, the road will improve traffic flow and ease congestion around Otovwodo Junction.
Governor Oborevwori’s administration remains resolute in its commitment to infrastructural development and security through education, ensuring that Delta State continues on a path of sustainable growth and prosperity.
