THE FEDERAL Government has ordered the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, reversing an earlier closure that had plunged motorists into hours-long gridlock.
The bridge, connecting Ahmadu Bello Way to Marina, was shut down on 1 April for planned maintenance and rehabilitation works.
Initially set to remain closed until May, the government has now postponed the repairs, opting instead for palliative measures to keep the bridge motorable.
Minister of Works Senator David Umahi announced the decision in a statement issued by the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Engr. Olukorede Kesha.
He assured the public that while full-scale repairs would be carried out later, ongoing remedial work would minimise disruption.
Expressing regret over the inconvenience caused by the initial closure, the Ministry of Works urged motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with authorities as further maintenance plans unfold.
