THE NIGERIAN National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Foundation is set to enhance its impact across Nigeria through three strategic programmes targeting healthcare, education, and agriculture.
These initiatives aim to uplift vulnerable communities by addressing critical needs in each sector, underlining NNPC Ltd.’s dedication to fostering sustainable national development.
With over 43% of blindness cases in Nigeria attributed to cataracts, the Foundation’s free cataract surgery programme has already achieved a significant milestone in the South-West, performing over 1,000 successful surgeries.
Expanding this outreach, the Foundation is now set to reach more regions, with 6,000 beneficiaries expected nationwide.
By providing free screenings, surgeries, and post-operative care, this initiative is committed to restoring sight to those in need, with the next phase rolling out in the South-East and South-South regions starting March 31, 2025.
Meanwhile, in an effort to address educational challenges, the Foundation is distributing 25,000 STEM textbooks to secondary schools across 24 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This builds on the success of an earlier phase, which saw the distribution of 15,000 STEM books in 12 states.
This initiative aims to bridge the gap in access to quality science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, an effort essential to fostering the next generation of scientists and innovators in Nigeria.
Recognising agriculture’s potential as a driver of economic growth, the NNPC Foundation is launching a nationwide training programme for 6,000 vulnerable farmers.
Kicking off in the South-East and South-South regions in April 2025, this training will equip farmers with modern techniques such as climate-smart farming and post-harvest loss reduction.
The programme seeks to empower farmers with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive agricultural sector.
In her statement, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, emphasised the Foundation’s commitment to addressing critical societal challenges.
“These initiatives are strategic investments in Nigeria’s future, not just interventions. They’re about improving lives, building stronger communities, and contributing to the overall health and prosperity of the nation.”
By reaching out across Nigeria, the NNPC Foundation says that its expansive efforts reflect a focused dedication to community empowerment and national growth.
The company notes that through these programmes, the Foundation is not only addressing immediate needs but also laying the groundwork for a more prosperous and resilient future for Nigerians.
