EFFORTS TO improve interstate trade and ease the movement of goods across Nigeria gained momentum as governors agreed to partner with the federal government to streamline levies and eliminate unauthorised checkpoints nationwide.

The resolution followed a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) held at its secretariat in Abuja, where state leaders deliberated on strategies to enhance the country’s transport and economic infrastructure.

The governors reached a consensus to support federal initiatives aimed at removing multiple taxation barriers that hinder the seamless flow of goods.

Their collective stance is expected to boost economic efficiency, reduce delays at borders, and address the concerns of transporters and business owners frequently subjected to arbitrary charges and harassment at illegal roadblocks.

The NGF also acknowledged the need for harmonised policy frameworks that align with the federal government’s push for economic reforms.

The governors pledged to continue engaging stakeholders to ensure that legitimate revenue sources are preserved while addressing the negative impacts of unauthorised levies and checkpoints on commerce.

They said their meeting served as a platform for renewed commitment towards creating a unified, business-friendly transport system capable of supporting national growth targets and fostering regional integration within the country.
